The 2nd Nanotechnology Safety for Success Dialogue was held in Brussels on October 2-3, 2008 and addressed innovation, safety, and consumer trust as they relate to nanotechnology. This Report, authored by Robert Madelin, the European Commissions Director General for Health and Consumer Protection, identifies ten actions for stakeholders and citizens to accomplish by Spring 2009. Among those actions discussed are: (i) preparing for the next conference, (ii) drafting discussion papers between EU members, (iii) launching sector-by-sector stakeholder dialogues, (iv) establishing a web-based platform for information exchange, (v)contemplating an EU-wide inventory of nanotechnology products, (vi) initiating studies for hypothetical applications, (vii) identifying the fastest ways to generate needed scientific knowledge, (viii) requesting EFSA to update food safety regulations, (ix) planning risk assessment of consumer nanotechnology products, and (x) creating a network of risk assessors for information exchange and collaboration. |
